Orange Muffins Recipe

There are so many ways to make breakfast muffins that your family will love. This combo of chocolate and orange is a big hit in our family.

If you’re not a fan of this flavor combo, you can always substitute a different fruit or use something other than chocolate chips. The great thing about muffins is that they’re so versatile and pretty hard to mess up.

Here are a few ideas for switching up your breakfast muffins that you might want to try:

  • Cranberry Orange Muffins- substitute fresh or frozen cranberries for the chocolate chips
  • Apple Cinnamon Muffins- add a teaspoon of cinnamon to the batter and use chopped apples in place of the oranges and leave the chocolate chips out. Or better yet, add walnuts for a protein punch.
  • Blueberry Muffins- leave the chocolate chips out and use fresh or frozen blueberries instead of oranges.
  • Raspberry Chocolate Chip Muffins- fold in some fresh raspberries before baking for a fun twist.

No matter what combination you choose, these orange muffins are sure to please. So preheat your oven and let’s get started!

How to Make Orange Chocolate Chip Muffins

To make these chocolate orange muffins, you will need a muffin pan, muffin liners (optional), a medium bowl, a cutting board, and a paring knife.

Because prepping the oranges can be a little messy and there’s cutting involved, I suggest letting little ones help measure the ingredients if they are helping you in the kitchen.

Step One

Preheat the oven and prepare the oranges as instructed in the recipe below

Step Two

Combine your dry ingredients except the sugar.

Step Three

Combine the remaining ingredients, including the oranges.

Step Four

Combine both mixtures and fold in the chocolate chips.

Step Five

Scoop the prepared batter into the muffin cups, filling them 3/4 full.

Bake and enjoy!

Pro Tip: If you want even more orange flavor to your muffins, you can squeeze some fresh orange juice and add some granulated sugar to make an orange glaze recipe to drizzle over warm muffins.

Why Orange Breakfast Muffins?

There are countless recipes that use oranges not only for the orange flavor, but the health benefits. Other recipes use homemade orange juice like this one for an extra nutrient boost.

Oranges are an excellent source of dietary fiber, vitamin C, and folic acid making them great for healthy digestion. They also contain calcium, potassium, and vitamins B1, B6, and A which help to fight infections and disease.

When you add oranges to your breakfast muffins recipe, you’ll be getting a nutritious start to your day that will help you power through until lunch.

While oranges are sweet, they’re also low on the glycemic index. This means that they produce a slower rise in blood sugar than other foods high in natural sugars, which makes them a good choice for diabetics and those hoping to maintain healthy blood sugar levels.

Can I Substitute Orange Juice For Milk?

If you’re out of milk, looking for a dairy-free option or just love the flavor of oranges, you can substitute orange juice for milk in this recipe.

Any type of orange juice will work, but I recommend using fresh squeezed orange juice or 100% pure orange juice without added sugar for the best flavor.

For best results, use a 1 to 1 ratio for orange juice and milk substitutions in muffin recipes. Meaning if you use 1/2 cup of freshly squeezed OJ, it will replace the 1/2 cup of milk in these orange muffins.

You’ll want to replace the exact amount of milk you were going to use with that much extra orange juice to make sure your muffin batter won’t be thin or bake improperly.

How Do I Store Chocolate Orange Muffins?

Once cool, orange chocolate chip muffins may keep at room temperature for up to five days in an airtight container.

If you put them in the refrigerator, you can extend that to a few days more.

Freezing Muffins

One of the great things about muffins is that you can make them ahead of time to eat during the week or double the batch and freeze the extra chocolate chip muffins.

To make sure  they don’t stick together, place them in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze for 2 hours. Once they are frozen solid, you can transfer them to a container or Ziploc bag and they will last in the freezer for up to 2 to 3 months.

When you want to eat one, just pop it in the microwave for about 30-45 seconds or until it’s nice and warm.
