How to Make a Mary Sanderson Hocus Pocus Cocktail

To make this Hocus Pocus drink recipe at home you will need Crown Royal Whiskey, Captain Morgan’s Cherry Vanilla Spiced Rum, cranberry juice, silver luster dust, maraschino cherries, mint sprigs, ice, dry ice, and a cocktail shaker.

You may be unfamiliar with a few of these ingredients, but don’t fly off the handle, we will talk about them next.

Silver Luster Dust

Edible silver luster dust is a sparkly powder that adds shimmer and shine to desserts and drinks. The powder is tasteless and safe, but it will give your cocktail that little extra oomph that makes it magical.

Dry Ice

Chances are you have heard of dry ice before, but you may not have ever used it before yourself at home. Dry ice is a form of solid carbon dioxide (CO2) with a surface temperature of -109 F. Because its temperature is so cold, you must NOT touch it directly with your hands.

When the dry ice is added to your drink it won’t melt like a liquid, instead, it lets off gas which is what gives this cocktail its spooky smoky effect.

Dry ice is completely safe for consumption as long as you purchase food-grade dry ice. However, you cannot swallow dry ice directly, or it will burn your GI tract, instead just put it in your drink and consume it as normal.

Not sure where to find dry ice? You can usually find it in some grocery stores. It is usually located in a special cooler near the front of the store, but it isn’t something that every grocery store carries. If you can’t find it, don’t worry, your drink will still be amazing and your guests won’t be the wiser.

Dry ice needs to be stored in the container that it came in, and not in the refrigerator or freezer. You also shouldn’t store it in an airtight container or the carbon dioxide can build up and explode. The release of gas from the dry ice will start as soon as you drop it into your glass, the effect will only last for five to ten minutes and then the dry ice will have evaporated.
